MAN – Metropolitan Area Network

There are few things which discriminate MANs from LANs and WANs.

  • The size of the network is between LAN’s and WAN’s size. It takes up from 5 to 15 kilometers diameter. But of course, the size is not strictly defined. It can be a whole city, or a few buildings in it.
  • The MAN network is not owned by a single organization. It is a network constituted of many users , usually controlled by one service provider. This requires every user to communicate with the MAN service provider.
  • Every MAN usually has a high-speed transfer abilities, used to share resources. It is often used to provide access to other, wider networks, most possible WAN’s.

The computers in the MAN network can also be connected using different methods. The easiest technology to implement in MAN is wireless technology. But optical fiber connections are also a common method of connection.
